While it was speculated that an injured thumb put Wriddhiman Saha’s England tour in jeopardy, on Thursday (July 19), it was revealed it was an injury to his right shoulder that ruled the ‘keeper out of the five-Test series. Saha picked up the thumb injury in the IPL 2018 second Qualifier clash against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens.
The shoulder injury, however, happened during the tour in South Africa. According to an Indian Express report, Saha was suffering from the shoulder injury for the last few months. The injury was detected during the IPL, and he played the tournament taking precautions and injections.
Saha has been struggling with a series of injuries. In the Cape Town Test, he picked up a hamstring injury and was forced to miss the remaining two Tests. He then injured his thumb during the IPL and was forced away from the action again.

Saha’s injury has opened the door for Rishabh Pant, who has been included in the Test squad that’ll take on England. While Dinesh Karthik is more or less confirmed as the first-choice ‘keeper, Pant has been included in the 18-man squad as back-up. India take on England in the first Test in Birmingham from August 1 before the teams travel to London, Nottingham, Southampton and then come back to London for the remaining four Tests.
